Inverness, Florida was originally known as Tompkinsville. The city was established in 1889, incorporated in 1919 and was named in honor of its sister city in Scotland. Inver is Gaelic for "mouth of the River". When looking out at the Tsala-Apopka chain of lakes, the name is apropo. It was not until much debate and physical moving did Inverness become the true County seat. In the late 1890's, it was decided that Mannfield was to no longer be the county seat of Citrus County. Many continued to argue on Mannfield's behalf and in the middle of the night, the courthouse and everything in it was moved to Inverness by way of horse and buggy. One of the things that was moved was the county clerk W.C. Zimmerman, who refused to leave his desk. Therefore, the desk, the chair and Zimmerman himself was 'stolen' and taken to Inverness.
