The Native Americans were the first to inhabit Homosassa, Florida thousands of years before the arrival of Hernando de Soto.  It wasn't until the early 1800's when David Levy Yulee came to the area, the true history of Homosassa began. A New York business man, Yulee was Florida's first U.S. Senator and one of Homosass's earliest settlers.  In 1851, during the Civil War, the Yulee Sugarmill began its operations by supplying the Confederate Army with sugar.  The mill was made of limestone and was worked by over 1000 slaves.  The main crops that were raised on Yulee's 5,100 acres of plantation were cotton, sugar cane and citrus.  In 1864, Yulees home was burned and his slaves were freed by the Union troops which ended the sugar mill operation.  Although the sugar mill is no longer operable, the remains of this amazing mill are preserved and still stand today.  After the end of the Civil War many of the families in the area relocated to some of the many smaller nearby islands, most of which are named for the families that settled there during this time.  Over the years, many of the rich and famous have frequented Homosassa.  Grover Cleveland became a regular fisherman in the area; Babe Ruth and "Dazzy" Vance were also part time residents to Homosassa, Florida. In 1904, Winslow Homer became a winter resident that produced some of his most famous art work in this region.
