Hernando, Florida was named after the Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto around 1881. Ellis Connell May was born in Georgia in 1868 and relocated to Hernando in 1892. May owned and operated a general store in the area for six years before moving to Dunnellon.  He returned to Citrus County in the early 1900's and opened another store in Inverness and operated it until 1916 when he was elected the County Judge.  Hernando, Florida was a bustling little town with many phosphate miners coming to the area with a head full of dreams!  It is reported that when these rowdy miners were on the way home from work each night, a bell was rung to let the woman of the town know to get off the streets and out of the way! Hernando, Florida was also once the home to Baseball's great Ted Williams.  Williams was considered to be one of the best hitters in baseball history.  He was indicted into the Hall of Fame in 1966 and after becoming the fourth player in Major League history to hit 500 home runs, Williams retired in 1972. Hernando was once the home to the Ted Williams Museum; however it was recently moved right behind the right field fence of Tropicana Stadium in Tampa, Florida.  There was much controversy after Williams death in 2002. In a procedure called neuroseparation, Williams' head was separated from his body and stored in a steel can filled with liquid nitrogen.  His body was taken by private jet to Alcor Life Extension Foundation in Scottsdale, Arizona where it stands upright in a 9ft cylindrical tank that is also filled with liquid nitrogen in the hopes to be preserved for the future.

Hernando, Florida is the home to over 8,000 residents, according to the 2000 census.  Located among the beautiful rolling hills and rivers of Citrus County, Hernando offers some of the best recreational activities in Florida.  From paddling, swimming, snorkeling, cave diving, and tubing to playing golf at some of the most prestigious Golf Courses in the State there is no such thing as a boring day in this area.  Relocating to Hernando, Florida offers opportunities for escaping the traffic, cold weather, high crime rates and high real estate taxes that effect most high population areas and replaces them with lakes, rivers, nature preserves, crystalline springs and the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.
