Floral City, Florida, named after the incredible wild flowers that grow in the area, was established in 1883. James Henry L. Barrs was a land owner, citrus farmer and founder of Floral City. During this time, Floral City was considered to be the largest city in Florida, larger than Miami, in fact, with a population of 300 while in Miami it was only 150. The city had a large population due to the phosphate mining that was dominate in the area. After World War I the mining industry was moved just south of Bartow.
