It was in the late 1800's that William Turner found the site of his new home. Located north of Crystal River, Florida, Turner named his homestead Cedar Grove, today, it is known as Red Level. In the early 1900's Crystal River became home to Cedar Harvesting Industry. This industry included a mill that created pencil slats for the Dixon Pencil Company.
Crystal River is the home to over 3,500 human residents and more than 300 manatees. Manatees in this area are mostly winter residents, as the springs remain at a consistent 72 degrees year round, the manatees migrate to this area for the water temperature. Crystal River, Florida is the only place in the State of Florida where it is legal to swim with the manatees. The residents in this area celebrate this fact with the Manatee Festival! This annual two day event is held in January and includes a fine art show, manatee education booths, incredible food choices, live entertainment, and Manatee Tours! The Manatee Festival promises two-days of fun for the whole family!
Located on Florida's Nature Coast, Crystal River provides miles of natural, untouched Florida beauty. Kings Bay, the heart of the Crystal River, provides the main spring that pumps millions of gallons of clear, cool waters into Crystal River per day, which accommodates for the paddling, boating, fishing, swimming and nature watching that has brought many people to this area. The 61-acre Crystal River Archaeological State Park once served as a ceremonial center for the Native American Indians that lived in the area. An estimated 7,500 Native American Indians may have come to this area once a year! The park provides boat tours, a museum, picnic area, and is also part of the Great Florida Birding Trail.
